MSI WS65 9TM Review – Laptop high-end design, top-notch performance

MSI has returned to the workstation laptop market with the high-end WS65 9TM lineup. It is equipped with a powerful 9th-generation Core i7 chip and Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000 Max-Q card inside a ultra-thin, durable chassis. This MSI laptop also has great battery life and a 15.6-inch display with stunning 4K resolution. With these outstanding strengths, the MSI WS65 9TM deserves to be honored on the list of the best laptop workstation in 2021. Let’s find out the detailed review of MSI WS65 9TM!

Design of MSI WS65 9TM

Possessing the strong points in the design of the MSI GS75 Stealth, the WS65 has an ultra-thin aluminum frame covered in an eye-catching black coating, with gold-plated details creating accents. The machine has good build quality, with every corner meticulously machined, with high precision.

The lid is decorated with a luxurious gold-plated stylized W logo. The interior of this high-end MSI laptop is equally eye-catching, with a white keyboard neatly placed on the body. The touchpad of the device is relatively large in size, decorated with a luxurious gold-plated frame. The power key of the device is also covered by a gold rim located just above the ventilation slot.

With a weight of 1.95kg and a 3-dimensional dimension of 14.1 x 9.8 x 0.7 inches, the MSI WS65 has a fairly compact body for a 15-inch laptop, especially the workstation laptop line. Its competitors, the Dell Precision 7730 (weighing 3.4 kg, 16.3 x 10.8 x 1.2 inches) and HP ZBook 15 G5 (weighing 2.58 kg, 14.8 x 10.4 x 1.0 inches), are relatively heavier than the MSI laptop in while the Lenovo Thinkpad P1 (weighing 1.81kg, 14.2 x 9.7 x 0.7 inches) is a bit lighter.

MSI WS65 is equipped with a 15.6-inch screen with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, giving excellent image quality, making the movies I watch more attractive. The screen of the machine is also high color accuracy, suitable for those who do content work, graphic design.

Based on the results of the colorimeter, the MSI WS65 panel has an impressive color coverage of 251% of the sRGB range, nearly 100% more than the average result of the workstation laptop (155%). This result also beat competitors in the same segment as the Precision 7730 (211%), ZBook 15 (112%) and ThinkPad P1 (179%).

With a measured result of 393 nits, the screen of the WS65 has excellent brightness, once again surpassing the 366-nit average of the laptop in the same segment. Compared to competitors’ measured brightness results, the WS65 has a brighter display than the Precision 7730 (330 nit) and the ThinkPad P1 (285 nits). The ZBook 15, however, was the overall winner with a measured brightness of 631 nits.

Keyboard and touchpad MSI WS65 9TM

The buttons of the MSI WS65 keyboard are responsive and have good bounce, but have not too deep of travel for a 15-inch laptop. The bright white lights below the buttons are of good quality, with clear, easy-to-read font.

Touchpad of the device has a size of 5.5 x 2.5 inches, with a smooth flat surface. The touchpad provided fast and accurate response to all my swipes and touches, creating a great user experience.


The MSI WS65 lower speaker system has an easy-to-hear sound quality, but the bass range has not been shown strongly, making the songs less vibrant.

Realtek Audio Console software allows you to adjust the sound with the available modes. The app also has sound environmental effects that allow the machine to emulate sounds from different environments.


Equipped with the latest configuration Intel Core i7-9750H chip, 32GB of RAM, it is not surprising that the WS65 possesses a strong performance. It has great multitasking capabilities, as evidenced by the fact that I can work normally while more than 40 Chrome tabs are open, with 4 tabs of 1080p video streaming on Youtube.

The excellent performance of the machine is shown when judging by Geekbench 4.1. With a score of 22,876, the MSI WS65 easily beats the 21,991 point average of the workstation laptop line. This result also beat the Core i7-8850H chip of the ZBook 15 (22,013 points) and the Xeon E-2176M chip of the ThinkPad P1 (18,782 points). However, the Core i9-8950HK chip delivered the final win for the Precision 7730 with a score of 24,800.

MSI WS65 took 10 minutes and 36 seconds to transcode a 4K video to 1080p resolution using HandBrake software, slightly lower than the 10-minute and 18-second average of the same segment laptop. Its three competitors, the Precision 7730 (8:59), ZBook 15 (9:53) and the ThinkPad P1 (9:45), all completed the test faster.
