Adventurous Things to Do in the Falkland Islands – Do not miss!

West Point Island

Adventurous Things to Do in the Falkland Islands

Following two-and-a-half days facing only the open ocean, waking up surrounded by the sweeping Falkland’s landscape felt surreal.

After rushing through breakfast, filling our water bottles, and donning our Poseidon Expeditions-provided parkas for the first time, we were on our inflatable Zodiac boat, speeding away to West Point Island.

On the dockside of West Point Island was the estate of the only permanent inhabitants of West Point Island, a husband-and-wife team who operate a large sheep farm. Generous promises of tea and crumpets at the sheep farmers’ residence were made – but would only be kept after the 1.5-mile, mostly uphill hike to the far side of the island!

Wander the Capital of Stanley

Roughly 3000 people live in the Falkland Islands, with perhaps 2000 of those residing in the capital city of Stanley. The town will give visitors the impression that they have stepped foot into an English village, complete with British architecture, flags, phone booths, and accents. Quaint shops, restaurants, and pubs complete the picture, although they aren’t the only sites to see while in Stanley. There are also several monuments to the naval and military heritage of the Islands, as well as a museum dedicated to the history of the Falklands. Be sure to drop by the harbor, where a ship wreck or two can be spotted in the waters, and no visit to the capital would be complete without dropping by the Christ Church Cathedral and its famous whalebone arch.

The Penguins of Volunteer Point

Located two hours by sometimes bumpy road from the capital of Stanley, Volunteer Point is a great place to get in some memorable wildlife watching. The big draw on this East Island location are the king penguins. Once nearly extinct, some 1,200 breeding pairs share a colony at Volunteer Point, although the area is also an important habitat for gentoo and Magellanic penguins.

Other native wildlife you’re likely to spot (bring your binoculars) include steamer ducks and white bridled finches, as well as sea lions.

For those wanting to make the most of a visit, check out one of the well-organized Volunteer Point tours. In addition to handling all the arrangements, you’ll benefit from a small group size (just four folks at a time, maximum), as well as a field expert to answer all your questions as you enjoy seeing the king penguins go about their business.

Christ Church Cathedral and Whalebone Arch

Pretty little Christ Church Cathedral, the world’s southernmost Anglican cathedral, was consecrated in 1892. A visit here should top your list of things to do when in Stanley. Designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield, it’s one of the few stone buildings in the Falkland Islands.

The cathedral grounds are where you’ll find the unique Whalebone Arch. Made from the jaws of two massive blue whales in 1933, it was designed to commemorate the centenary of British rule. Standing beneath these impressive bones is certainly a humbling experience – and an ideal Falklands selfie opportunity.

If you’re able to include South Georgia Island in your Falklands itinerary, do it – and take your camera. Situated some 1,387 kilometers east of the Falklands, this glacier- and snow-covered island equals its larger neighbor in terms of its abundance of wildlife, as well as stunning scenery.

Highlights include a huge number of king penguins, many of them located in St. Andrews Bay, plus more than two million fur seals that visit each summer. There’s also an impressive number of albatross (more than 250,000 at last count) that call the island home.
